The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) Chairman, Binay K. Dutta, on Friday said sponge iron factories in the State have of late responded to its proposals to reduce pollution through use of coal-bed methane.

WBPCB sent a ‘16-point directive’ to the 58 sponge iron factories recently.

“We suggested that the sponge iron factories switch to coal-bed methane for the manufacture of sponge iron in order to reduce pollution indirectly. Many of them have responded to our proposals,” Dutta told presspersons here.

He was addressing an interactive session on industrial pollution and its mitigation organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

Dutta, however, said the State Government’s initiatives would not work in reducing pollution unless the sponge iron industries came forward.
