Farm varsity analysts foresee an increase in the price of small onion from mid-October.
In its recommendation to small onion growers, the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (Demic) functioning at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here has advised farmers to store and sell the produce after about a month or so.
“The farm-gate price is expected to rule above Rs 45 a kg during harvest period (between September and end-October,” say varsity experts.
The price of the small onion in Dindigul market is said to be ranging between Rs 35 and Rs 43 a kg at present.
The National Horticultural Board’s Second Advance Estimates (2012-13) show a marginal decline in the area and production of onion in Tamil Nadu. It has fallen from 37,120 hectares in 2011-12 to 36,310 hectare the following year and the production drop has been from a level of 5.56 lakh tonnes to 3.99 lakh tonne in 2012-13.
