Tamil Nadu today recorded 2,174 coronavirus positive cases — its highest number so far — taking the total number of infections past the 50,000 mark to 50,193. The rise is mainly attributed to the significant increase in testing of samples: 25,463 on Wednesday. The State has so far tested 7.73 lakh samples.
While Chennai alone recorded 1,276 cases on Wednesday, there was a significant increase in new cases in districts such as Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet and Ramanathapuram.
After 842 covid positive patients were discharged today, the total number of persons treated for the virus increased to 27,624, leaving the total number of active cases in the State at 21,990.
On Wednesday, 48 deaths were reported, taking the total number of fatalities due to the virus to 576, says a health ministry bulletin.
