The TDP Politburo will meet on Friday evening, when it may take a decision on parting ways with the BJP, as its ties with the ruling party have already reached a point of no return.
Both TDP ministers in the Narendra Modi Cabinet had quit earlier this month, and BJP representatives in the Andhra Pradesh dispensation had also put in their papers.
Meanwhile, the TDP has backed its rival YSR Congress’ decision to move a no-confidence motion against the Modi government in the Lok Sabha. However, it believes there is a tacit understanding between the BJP and the YSRC, the main Opposition in AP. TDP leaders say its support to the no-trust vote is in keeping with the interests of the State and “also to expose the double-game being played by the YSRC and the BJP”.
To add to the political excitement in the State, Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader and film star Pawan Kalyan jumped into the fray on Wednesday evening, charging Chief Minister and his son, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, of being steeped in corruption. He was addressing a political rally near Nagarjuna University, between Vijayawada and Guntur.
During the 2014 elections, Pawan Kalyan had lent his support to the TDP-BJP combine. He claims that his support was crucial for the victory of the coalition.
The ‘Power Star’ also announced that he would go on an indefinite fast demanding the special category status for the State. He made it clear that he was breaking with the TDP as well as the BJP.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu condemned Pawan Kalyan’s charges, and said the rally was organised only to abuse him and his son. Naidu said he found it strange that Pawan Kalyan had not uttered a word against the BJP or the Union Government refusing to grant SCS to the State.
