Telangana to add 10,000 mw power in next three years

Telangana Government is planning a power generation capacity addition of 10,000 mw over the next three years, which includes 4000 mw by NTPC Limited.

This capacity addition, planned to be commissioned over the next three years, is aimed at not only bridging the power deficit faced by the new State of Telangana now but also meeting the growing energy demand in the State, according to K.Chandrasekhar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana.

After visiting the Genco developed 500 mw Bhopalapally power plant, the Chief Minister expressed happiness over the high plant load factor of 95.08 per cent it has managed to achieve and complemented the Genco staff.

Reviewing the progress of 600 mw expansion project at the same location, he said the project, which was started in 2009, has failed to make much progress due to negligence of the Governments in the past. He directed the TSGenco to commission the project by August this year, which would partially bridge the existing demand supply mismatch.

Referring to the 10,000 mw capacity planned in the State, he said that it would be better to execute these projects by State-owned entities rather than handing over project development to private sector players.

The Chief Minister felt that in spite of the Telangana having coal and water resources, Governments in the past failed to take up power projects in the region and focussed on setting up projects in Andhra.

He said that Genco was capable of implementing these projects as per schedule and achieving high plant loan factor as demonstrated at the Bhoopalapally project, he said.
