Elections for the Thiruvarur assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu and the Jind assembly constituency in Haryana will be held on January 28, 2019 while counting for both the constituencies will be taken up on January 31, the Election Commission announced on Monday.
The Thiruvarur constituency seat fell vacant after the demise of DMK leader M Karunanidhi while elections in Jind were necessitated after the sitting MLA passed away in September this year.
In its order, the Commission said that it has been decided to use Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the Verifiable Voter Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) in all the polling stations in the two States.
The statement added that adequate numbers of EVMs and VVPATs have been made available for holding the by-elections.
The Commission has said that the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect in both the assembly constituencies.
With the MCC in force, the central or the State government cannot announce any new schemes or projects, or undertake any activities which are prohibited in the two assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Haryana.
