The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has decided to move the Madras High Court seeking relief from the unprecedented power cuts being experienced by the State of up to 16 hours a day.
The chamber would press for equitable distribution of power across the State and ensure at least eight hours of continuous power supply besides stopping night-time power cuts.
A consultative meeting of various trade and industry bodies here yesterday also resolved to stage a demonstration in front of the Madurai Regional Office of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) on October 22 to press their demands.
Chamber Senior President S. Rethinavelu said trade and industry in the State had spent Rs 28,000 crore on diesel-powered generators in the last one year.
He urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to form a committee comprising representatives of trade and industry bodies in the State and elicit their views to tackle the crisis.
Chamber President N. Jegatheesan said power shortage would widen to 7,500 MW in a few years.
