Tamil Nadu government today launched Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems initiative which will computerise various activities of the police department and also act as a police-public interface.
A total of 2899 locations, including over 1400 police stations, will be networked through the CCTNS which was in its first phase launched in Coimbatore, Sivaganga, Tiruvallur and Ariyalur districts by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through video conferencing from Chennai.
A police modernisation scheme implemented under the National e-governance scheme, CCTNS has been equipped with exclusive CIPRUS software developed by National Informatics Centre, a state government release here said.
Over Rs 110 crore has been spent on the initiative.
In the four districts, over 150 locations including 110 police stations have been networked under CIPRUS (Common Integrated Police Record Updated System) through internet, it said.
Under this project, FIRs in police stations concerned and case details will be uploaded online and stored at the state information centre while facilities for public to file complaints and apply for licences will be created, it said.
Union Home Ministry had asked that the project be implemented in at least two districts but the state government in the initial phase had introduced it in four, the release said.
