Trying to forge Third Front was a mistake, says CPI(M) report

The effort was fruitless and detracted the party from developing its independent strength, said the report.

In the run-up to the 21st congress of the CPI(M) to be held in Visakhapatnam, the leadership of the party released two documents — the Political Resolution and the Political Tactical Line — here on Wednesday. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said the main task before his party is to resist the “communal onslaught” of Sangh Parivar forces.

There has been a major change in the political situation of the country after Lok Sabha elections, Karat said, adding that there has been a “right wing offensive” under the Modi government.

“This is fuelled by two forces. One by aggressive push for neo-liberal policies and second the offensive of the Hindutva forces,” he said.

“What is unfolding is a multi-pronged effort to advance the disruptive Hindutva project which threatens the secular-democratic basis of the Republic.

“The statements by BJP leaders and MPs threatening those who do not agree with the Hindutva ideas; the glorification of Nathuram Godse; the “reconversion” of Muslims and Christians to the fold of Hinduism; the demand that the Ram temple be built at Ayodhya — these are all part of this RSS driven plan,” said the draft political resolution, which will be discussed by CPI(M) members.

The draft report on the Political Tactical Line said the party has been working on forging an alliance of Left, democratic and secular parties. “This quest has been fruitless and (it) detracted the focus on developing the independent strength of the party based on developing movements and struggles, at times underplaying the priority of fighting against the neo-liberal policies of successive governments,” it admitted.
