The former Prime Minister, HD Deve Gowda, has opposed a uniform civil code for India.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Saturday, he said that the country has many religions and each one of them has its own tradition to follow. He wondered if there is a need to interfere in such a situation.
There is no need for uniform civil code in the country as there are many other things to do, Gowda said, and stressed the need to address the issues such as the crisis in agriculture sector and farmers’ suicides.
Farmers’ woes
Many farmers in Karnataka are also under distress. He said he had got representations from arecanut and rubber growers from the coastal Karnataka. He will lead an agitation in Dakshina Kannada district, if the State government fails to address the problems of farmers from the region, he said.
Some of the neighbouring states have taken steps to tackle the problems of farmers in their states. Such initiatives should also be followed in Karnataka, he said.
