United India Insurance plans to adopt another 5 villages before the end of this fiscal. Part of its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activity started in 2012, it has so far adopted 25 villages across the country.
Adoption of Kudanur village near Anaikatti seemed special as the company normally limits the number to two per regional office a year, but this village happened to be its third in the Coimbatore region and sixth in the State.
And like every other corporate, United India looks to provide basic infrastructure such as providing drinking water, building school blocks, library, solar lighting and so on.
At Kudanur, the company plans to construct a multi-purpose community hall.
Speaking to BusinessLine , Milind Kharat, Chairman and Managing Director of United India, said the community hall will also serve as a computer training centre.
The company, in tie-up with Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central, plans to impart computer training to interested youths in the hamlet.
“Interestingly, there are about half-a-dozen graduate and diploma holders in this hamlet,” Kharat said. Since this small tribal hamlet is located in the elephant corridor, the man-animal conflict in this village has literally petrified the 120-odd families residing at Kudanur.
The tribals say that they are unable to take-up any full time assignment, for if they reach the village after 5 pm, the risk of running into elephants is high. “Not a week passes without an accident. So we are apprehensive about sending our children beyond a radius of 2-3 km to work,” said one of the older women.
United India has provided accident insurance cover to every inhabitant of Kudanur. “It is intended to provide cover for elephant attacks as well,” said Kharat
