Tamil Nadu has to escape the `vicious spiral’ of AIADMK-DMK governments and opt for a change, according to Vaiko, General Secretary, MDMK and convenor of the People’s Welfare Front.

Addressing a campaign at RK Nagar Assembly constituency in North Chennai, he said both political parties’ leadership face corruption charges -- the ruling AIADMK’s leader J Jayalalithaa is facing allegations of amassing wealth and the case is before the Supreme Court; and close relatives of the DMK leader Karunanidhi are facing allegations of involvement in the spectrum scam.

RK Nagar has taken centre stage in the coming Assembly elections on May 16 as Jayalalithaa, who is also the present chief minister, is contesting the elections from here.

Vaiko said Tamil Nadu has voted for one or the other party in recent decades and it is now time for change, he said urging the gathering to vote for the DMDK-PWF-TMC alliance in the May 16 Assembly Elections.

The four-party PWF, which includes the CPI, CPI(M), VCK, in alliance with the Vijayakant-led DMDK and the TMC, is a strong alliance that has promised good governance, he said.

Canvassing support for Vasanti Devi, a first time contender, and an academician, Vaiko said the alliance, if voted to power, will focus on healthcare and education apart from introducing prohibition.

All government hospitals will be upgraded with modern equipment, government educational institutions will be upgraded, an ethic committee with members from prominent members of the society will guide governance and a public audit committee will monitor infrastructure development to ensure a corruption-free environment.

Vasanti Devi said RK Nagar in the heart of Chennai, lacks basic infrastructure and sanitation facilities. The poor, daily wage earning population in this section of the city bears the brunt of the polluted environment. It is the government’s duty to provide quality healthcare, education and other basic facilities. If voted to power the alliance government will ensure quality education and healthcare for all. (EOM)
