Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi earlier this week, has shown signs of improvement, doctors at the hospital said on Wednesday.
Vajpayee was admitted on June 11 after he developed an urinary tract infection. Since then, he has also developed chest congestion and has had low urine output. He was evaluated by a team of doctors and treated to injectible antibiotics. He was also given slow dialysis to support his kidney function.
“He has shown significant improvement with treatment,” said Aarti Vij, Chairperson, Media and Protocol Division, AIIMS.
Vajpayee’s kidney function is back to normal, as also his heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure are normal and being maintained without support, she said adding “We are hopeful that he should fully recover in the next few days.”
The 93-year-old leader has been in a near-vegetative state for many years. “Up until last year, he used to sit and watch television responsively, but even that has ceased now,” a close family friend told BusinessLine .
