The West Bengal Government on Friday said that the three-phased panchayat polls would be conducted as per schedule, beginning July 2.
According to State Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee, the State would not move the Supreme Court to challenge an order by a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court.
Mukherjee announced the State Government’s decision following a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other officials. The Minister, however, did not clarify on the State Government’s readiness to provide the required security personnel.
On Thursday, the Bench comprising Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalyo Bagchi, upheld the supremacy of the State Election Commission and said that the SEC would decide on the requirement of security personnel to conduct the polls and the State would make arrangements.
