WB to create unfinished infrastructure for Calcutta Leather Complex

West Bengal Government has taken up the responsibility of creating the unfinished infrastructure for the 1100-acre Calcutta Leather Complex.

Ramesh Kumar Juneja, Eastern Regional Chairman of the Council of Leather Exports and the chief of the regional chapter of the Indian Leather Product Association (ILPA) told reporters here that the State Government assured the industry that it would set up two treatment plants, additional sewerage system and prepare a 50-acre landfill area complete with solid waste management facilities.

“The State Government has asked Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority to prepare a detailed project report for the infrastructure required at the complex at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore”, Juneja said.

ILPA was also planning to develop a 130-acre Footwear Park within the complex at an estimated cost of Rs 1000 crore.

“ILPA is in the process of forming special purpose vehicle for it. The member-driven SPV is expected to carry on with the project”, Juneja added.

A separate SPV would take up the expansion project of the Leather Goods Park. Currently, Leather Goods Park has 60 acres of land. Another 110 acres of unused land in the complex would be added to the park.
