With the Centre going ahead with its plans to oppose triple talaq, the Congress took a cautious position on the issue, apparently to keep minority groups in good humour.
Congress spokesperson and youth wing president Shobha Oza said here on Friday the party does not want to comment on the matter as it is sub judice. “As far as triple talaq is concerned, the matter is sub judice. And we have full faith in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has always safeguarded the rights of women of our country. So we will await its decisions. The Congress has always favoured women empowerment,” she said.
“The Supreme Court has in the past also empowered women — such as on maintenance under CRPC section 125,” she added.
Congress sources indicate that the cautious approach is not to “fall” for the BJP’s attempt to start a dialogue on triple talaq. A party leader said a final view will be taken after the decision of the apex court on the case.
“Let’s wait and see what’s the BJP’s plan on this,” the leader added.

The Congress is trying to forge Dalits, backward classes and Muslims together, eyeing the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
A section of the party believes that “falling into” the BJP agenda to initiate a campaign on Uniform Civil Code, linking it with triple talaq, is not a good idea, especially while forging an alliance of Dalits and Muslims.
