Can web searches on political parties and leaders be indicative of the voting pattern?
With Andhra Pradesh and Telangana going to polls on April 11, analysis of web searches before the voting day originating from the two states throw interesting trends.
According to the Google Trends, in Andhra Pradesh, YS Jaganmohan Reddy and his party YSR Congress Party lead the search. In Telangana, N Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) got most searches over the past 90 days.
Does that indicate voters are considering an alternative to the TDP in Andhra Pradesh and to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Telangana?
The TDP had won 15 seats of the 25 in Andhra Pradesh in 2014, and the TRS 11 of the 17 in Telangana. Andhra Pradesh is also voting to elect the new State Assembly, and the search trends would be worrying for Chandrababu Naidu while raising hopes of Jaganmohan Reddy to wrest power.
