The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, which visited the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India here, said they were assured that the unit cost of nuclear power would be ₹ 3.94.
Committee Chairman Ashwani Kumar, said based on the presentation made to them, not much could be said about the capital cost of nuclear plants, as it was dependent on too many factors, but the localisation component for building them was expected to be as high as 85 per cent.
Kumar said they were detailed about the safety measures taken in entirety. From the sustainability point of view, nuclear energy was a green option, he said.
The committee was also told that BARC and the Health Ministry were working together to offer affordable nuclear medicine for cancer patients across the country.
Similar work was being done to bring nuclear research to treat water contamination and develop seed variety resistant to certain types of soil, besides increase in yield.
Referring to the insurance package proposed for the nuclear liability, he said this was within the framework and architecture of the existing policy.
