Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is scheduled to meet Governor P Sathasivam and tender the resignation of his United Democratic Front (UDF) government later this morning.

The UDF had suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of main rival Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Assembly results of which declared yesterday.

The LDF has secured close to two-thirds majority in a House of 140 by clinching 91 seats against 47 of the UDF. The BJP opened its account from Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram through O Rajagopal.

Meanwhile, it is reliably learnt that Chandy may not take over the position of the Leader of Opposition in the 14th state Assembly in view of the heavy defeat in the elections.

He had said that he would be solely responsible for any electoral setback that the UDF might receive at the end of its five-year term.

Chandy also suffered a personal setback in having lost many of his ministerial colleagues and top leaders of the faction that he leads within the Congress.

The mantle is likely to fall on Ramesh Chennithala, Home Minister, in the outgoing government and leader of the rival faction in the party that has an upper hand in terms of seats won this time round.
