The passage of the AP Reorganisation Act in the Lok Sabha incorporating amendments and transferring the submerged areas under the Polavaram project in Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh has been received with happiness in AP and concern in Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has welcomed the development.
Reacting to the passage of the Bill, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao expressed his deep dissatisfaction over the passing of the Ordinance incorporating amendments to the State Reorganisation Act by the Lok Sabha today and transfer of the submerged areas under the Polavaram project in Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh.
He described this as a clear violation of Article 3.
The Chief Minister described the NDA Government’s decision as unfortunate and undemocratic.
He said the Centre should have taken into confidence the Telangana Government and obtained its consent before passing this Ordinance in Parliament.
He said though his party MPs argued against the move, the NDA did not consider their objections and went ahead.
The Chief Minister said he had himself requested the Centre and the President to change the design of the Polavaram project.
The Chief Minister said the MLAs and MPs of the BJP and TDP should have opposed the Ordinance in Parliament.
Even though the Ordinance was passed in the Lok Sabha, the fight against it would continue.
Legal luminaries and constitutional experts were being consulted in this regard. In fact the Polavaram design should have been changed instead of going ahead with the passing of the Ordinance and the issue could have been amicably settled, the Chief Minister said.
