An expected low-pressure area has sprung up over the Bay of Bengal and is forecast to intensify by tomorrow, boosting the monsoon over East and Central India as well as the Konkan region.
This morning the 'low' was located over North-west Bay of Bengal, off the South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts, an India Met Department update said.
It would intensify a round to being 'well-marked' over its location in the next 24 hours, the Met said. International models see the monsoon strengthening under its influence during the rest of this week.
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts sees the system acting as the pivot for the peak performance of the monsoon until July 5.
According to the US Climate Prediction Centre, the wet to extreme wet session from this phase of the monsoon may last beyond the first week of July (July 9).
The rain-generating 'low' may move in a west-northwest direction into Odisha and Madhya Pradesh before entering Rajasthan.
The 'low' would enter the farming heartland of the country bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall over Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, South Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutch, Konkan, Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala.
