Industrial technology major Ingersoll Rand is working on a new “Nano-like” concept for dwellings  which will be small, affordable and sustainable, Venkatesh Valluri, Chairman and President has said.

“We are building houses where the convergence concept comes to fruition. We should be able to demonstrate the use sustainable technologies for energy, IT, light, water and sanitation,” he said, adding that the `sustainable habitat’ initiative was underway at IR’s Bangalore campus.

The 250 sq ft homes that will be designed for five different climatic zones, will typically be priced at Rs 2 lakh and service the lower segments of the socio economic strata.

“We are trying to see whether we can be successful in designing such dwellings,” Valluri said, adding that the company hoped to have it for public viewing in the next one year.

The company has short listed several ideas that it has received and each single floor dwelling will have multiple technologies embedded in it. Some of these could be use of cloud computing for knowledge needs, use of solar or bio-mass for energy he explained, but said that it was still a premature stage to make any assessment.
