With more than 350 building products securing green product (GreenPro) ratings, the market for such products is estimated at over ₹18 lakh crore by 2022.
As per the Indian Green Building Council estimates, these products, covering cement, glass sanitaryware and other materials that go into development of green buildings will be sought after as they are not only environmental-friendly, but also energy-efficient in the long term.
According to experts at the Indian Green Building Council of the CII, more than 350 products have been thus far certified and this number is seen to quickly swell to over 400 and even go past the 500-mark.
Parasu Raman R, Chairman of CII-Green Products and Services Council, said that to unleash the potential of such products, the CII has launched Greenpro-Green Product certification, a first-of-its-kind eco label for building products in the country.
Lifecycle approach
Under the Greenpro, a life-cycle based approach is adopted for evaluating products. Products certified so far include that of ACC Cement, Nippon Paints, Saint-Gobain Glass, Asahi India Glass, Godrej Furniture and Visakha Industries.
C Shekar Reddy, Chairman of IGBC, Hyderabad, and Managing Director of CSR Estates, said the CII would play a facilitators role in popularising the green concepts and products. While working with state governments and various departments, the adoption of these products would be encouraged. Reddy said that the IGBC has taken to rating of metro projects and over 20 metro stations in Hyderabad have been rated till now.
Of the over 5.2 billion sq. ft of buildings registered, about 1 billion sq.ft has been certified for green norms. The CII-IGBC is looking at achieving the ambitious target of 10 billion sq.ft by 2022, where the GreenPro rated products will play a crucial role.
