Development of roads along the waterfront in Mangaluru can be part of the smart city project for the city, according to UT Khader, Karnataka Urban Development Minister.

Addressing presspersons after reviewing the progress of Mangaluru smart city project on Monday, Khader said the meeting looked into the possibilities of developing roads along the waterfront in Mangaluru. A separate team that includes experts and elected representatives has been formed to look into the possibilities.

He said that various issues such as widening of roads on those stretches will have to be discussed with the citizens of the areas concerned before taking a decision on the plan.

Khader said the Managing Director of Mangaluru Smart City project has been asked to conduct review meeting of the project with the stakeholders every fortnight. The special purpose vehicle, which has been set up for the implementation of the smart city project, has been asked to conduct its board meeting every month. Apart from this, an advisory committee that includes elected representatives from the city will also meet every month to look into the progress of the smart city project, he said, adding that all measures would be taken for the implementation of the project components in the smart city project.

Khader said the Monday’s meeting also discussed issues related to traffic congestion in the city, and the measures to tackle them. He opined that some parts in the city may require the construction of flyovers to ease traffic congestion.

Apart from this, proposals were also mooted to widen some minor roads that connect the city with the national highway.
