The Indian Government has demanded that the Pakistan Government conduct a "thorough investigation" to identify those who were responsible for the attack on Sarabjit Singh in Kot Lakhpat jail and ensure that those responsible are punished.
Singh, who was on death row in the jail, was grievously attacked on April 26 and succumbed to his injuries early on Thursday morning.
"The shocking attack on Singh highlights the need for concerted action by Pakistan to safeguard Indians in Pakistani jails," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a media statement. The Ministry has also asked the Pakistani authorities to release the body so that Singh can be given a funeral in India and among his own people.
Singh had strayed in to Pakistan almost 20 years back.
