CSIR-NIIST (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology), Thiruvananthapuram, is hosting the eighth annual meeting of the Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences and the conference on 'Deliberation on translation of basic scientific insights into affordable healthcare products' from Monday to Wednesday.

Delegates from various fields of biomedical sciences are expected to attend, an official spokeswoman said here.

Among those who have confirmed participation are Satheesh Raghavan (Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru); Madhu Dikshit (Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad); Jay Kalra (Canada); Sarman Singh (AIIMS, Delhi); and faculties from various medical schools (AIIMS Delhi, Patna, Bhopal; PGIMER,Chandigarh; Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology and Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram; IITs; NIMHANS; JIPMER, National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Educational and Research; and CSIR labs Indian Institute of Toxicology and Research; Indian Institute of Chemical Technology; Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology; and Indian Institute of Chemical Biology.

The topics on which deliberations will be held are metabolic syndrome and associated complications; epidemiology; communicable diseases; Indian systems of medicine; cancer; natural products and nutraceuticals, and drug discovery.

The event is meant for premier scientific experts to update and initiate collaborative research among researchers from various institutes and research labs for translating research for public health, the spokeswoman said.
