Noted astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar today said that the energy problem could be permanently solved if scientists succeed in their efforts to create the amount of energy found at the core of the sun, using reactors.

Narlikar was speaking during the Youth Day programme organised by Shri Shivaji Education Society here to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand.

He also said that mounting giant mirrors in the space to procure energy from the sun could also provide a solution to this crisis.

“The sun has tremendous energy at its centre, which is generated by the conversion of positive and negative electrons of hydrogen into helium. We get this energy in the form of the sunlight,” he said.

“Scientists are experimenting whether such energy could be created using reactors. The fuel it needs is heavy water, which is abundantly available in the seas.

“The experiment is going on for the last ten years and people believe that it would succeed in future. When scientists would attain success in converting hydrogen particles into helium, similar energy that we get from the sun could be generated, which would resolve our energy crisis,” he said.

Dr Narlikar also suggested that installing giant mirrors in the space to capture the sunlight could also help in resolving the energy crisis effectively.

“In the time when natural resources were fast drying up, these measures could successfully solve the energy problem in future,” he said.
