A Soyuz capsule carrying three crew members and the Olympic torch for the 2014 Winter Games was on its way back to Earth late Sunday.

The capsule carrying Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, US astronaut Karen Nyberg and Italian Luca Parmitano left the International Space Station at 2326 GMT, US space agency NASA said.

The Soyuz was due to land in Kazakhstan early Monday about three hours after undocking.

Yurchikhin was to hand the unlit Olympic torch over to organisers of the Sochi games. It was brought to the ISS on Saturday, handed over between two spacewalkers during a spacewalk relay, and will be used to light the Olympic flame on February 7.
