A gigantic gamma ray telescope designed, developed and manufactured by the Electronics Corporation of India Limited, here is all set to be moved to its home in Hanle in Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir.
The giant Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) Telescope which weighs approximately 180 tonne, when installed in the near future will be the second largest of its type in the world.
The telescope has undergone all the field trails successfully and is ready for dispatch. It will be flagged off on Saturday from here. The telescope is expected to help the scientific community of the country to enhance their understanding in the fields of astrophysics, fundamental physics, particle acceleration mechanisms etc.
Similar telescopes set-up in Namibia, Europe and US have been realized by collaborative efforts of multiple institutions, where as, the MACE Telescope has been designed and realized from concept stage to trial assembly stage by ECIL, Hyderabad with technology support from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.
