The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can be defeated in the 2019 Parliamentary election if all the secular parties decide to fight in unity, said the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI).

Addressing the mediapersons in Mangaluru on Tuesday, MK Faizy, national president of SDPI, said that all secular political parties should leave aside their political and personal interests. They should unite in the next Lok Sabha elections to save the country from the BJP, he said.

Citing Gorakhpur Lok Sabha by-election as an example, he said the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance helped their candidate win the election.

Asked if the SDPI will be a part of the proposed ‘mahagathbandhan’ of the opposition parties, Faizy said, “the SDPI will think of the future course of action only after getting a clear picture on mahagathbandhan.

“We don’t have problem in aligning with any secular parties,” he said.

“The SDPI will play a major role in the campaigns to oust the BJP, ” he added..

On SDPI’s support to Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate of the united opposition, he said issues such as foreign and financial policy, welfare projects for the people, will have to be prioritised before selecting the PM candidate.
