Farhan Akhtar’s latest film, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which depicts the life of sportsman Milkha Singh, has received a six-month entertainment tax waiver from the Maharashtra Government.
Akhtar had recently met Maharashtra Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat seeking a tax holiday on the film, so that it can reach a wider audience.
The film was released on July 12 and it has received a thumping response from the box office.
On Saturday, the Revenue Department by a Government resolution provided the tax sop to the film.
The National Film Development Corporation being the co-producer of the film has also helped in getting the sop.
An official of the Chief Minister’s office said that usually tax breaks are given to films based on subjects, which are closer to Maharashtra.
But since the film is based on the life of Milkha Singh, it will provide inspiration to all the people.
Although the decision to provide the tax break has been taken by Thorat, the final clearance was given by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, the official said.
Biopics have always received a good response from Bollywood film buffs.
Black and white film, Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani by V. Shantaram was a super hit in 1946.
Later films on leaders such as Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose and Mangal Pandey were also well received by the audience.
