“I am deeply humbled and honoured that the Honourable Supreme Court of India has entrusted me with the job of being the Interim President of the BCCI till the end of IPL 7. Like with my cricket, I will give it my best shot,” said batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, in a statement.
Having served as a member of the Indian Premier League’s Governing Council and given his stature in the game, Gavaskar, many former players believe, will settle into the new role smoothly.
Gavaskar faces the immediate and challenging task of restoring credibility in the scandal-ridden league as it shifts to the United Arab Emirates for the first phase of IPL-7, from April 16 to 30.
The tournament will have three venues: Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
Incidentally, in 1994, it was in the emirate of Sharjah that Gavaskar had to step in as India’s coach, when Ajit Wadekar suddenly fell ill during the Austral-Asia Cup.
