Maria Sharapova’s hip injury, which has kept her off court for more than a month, forced the world number two to withdraw on Sunday from the upcoming Toronto Masters.
The event staring August 5 announced the absence of the LA-based Russian due to the Wimbledon injury, which already caused her pullout from this week’s WTA Stanford event.
Sharapova last played in the Wimbledon second round, losing on June 26 to Michella Larcher De Brito of Portugal.
“I’m extremely disappointed that I am unable to play in Toronto next week as it’s one of the best and most important tournaments of the year,” Sharapova said. “I was looking forward to making a healthy return to the courts in front of my Canadian fans. But unfortunately I’m just not recovered yet.” The 2009 finalist will have to front up in Toronto for obligatory medical checks and will work in a public relations outing.
