With 10 sportspersons from the North-East taking part in 2012 London Olympics, North Eastern Council has announced cash award of Rs 40 lakh, Rs 20 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists to promote sports in the region, officials said here today.
NEC also gave Rs 10 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh for Asian and Commonwealth Games winners of gold, silver and bronze medals.
Chekrovolu Swuro (Nagaland), Jayanta Talukdar (Assam), Laishram Bombayla Devi (Manipur) and Tarundeep Rai (Sikkim) are competing in archery discipline.
L Devendro Singh (Manipur) and five-time world champion MC Mary Kom along with the youngest Indian athlete will compete in different categories of boxing.
N Soniya Chanu (Manipur) will compete in weightlifting, Somdev Devvarman (Tripura) will be playing tennis while Kothajit Singh (Manipur) is part of the hockey contingent.
During the National Games held at Jarkhand, sportspersons from Manipur together won Rs 556 lakh, Arunachal Pradesh bagged Rs 21 lakh, Assam Rs 146 lakh, Meghalaya Rs 10 lakh, Mizoram Rs 11 lakh, Nagaland Rs 18 lakh, Tripura Rs 15 lakh and Sikkim Rs 5 lakh.
