Intex Technologies, which owns the newly formed Rajkot IPL team, on Tuesday announced its official name as 'Gujarat Lions'.
The team also announced Suresh Raina as its captain. Other key players in the team include Brendon McCullum, Ravindra Jadeja, James Faulkner and Dwayne Bravo. Brad Hodge has been named as the coach of the team.
Keshav Bansal, Owner, Gujarat Lions, and Director, Intex Technologies, said, “We have named our team Gujarat Lions to try and capture the spirit of Gujarat which has a rich cricketing history. The name brings instant connect with fans not just across the state but across the world.”
The company has crowd-sourced the name on Facebook and had received over 5,000 responses before it narrowed down on the official name.
This will be the first IPL team from the state of Gujarat, where Intex has a strong presence. “Intex is a youth brand. We believe Intex and IPL have the same brand attributes. Also IPL’s mass reach and connect is unchallenged and it made logical sense for us to buy an IPL team,” he added.
