BCCI President N. Srinivasan, facing uncomfortable questions over his son-in-law's arrest in connection with the spot-fixing scam, will convene a press meet here in the city this evening.
It is, however, not clear whether the BCCI President will announce his resignation or not. Till yesterday, Srinivasan had remained defiant on his stand of not quitting the post, claiming that he had not done anything wrong.
According to a release by the BCCI, Srinivasan will address the media at 4 p.m. Clamour for resignation of the BCCI chief has been growing since the arrest of his son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan, over charges of spot-fixing.
If Srinivasan is to be forced out, the BCCI rules stipulate that a notice signed by at least 10 members has to be given to the Board secretary who will then convene an emergency general meeting. Srinivasan can be sacked if two-thirds of the members present and voting support his removal.
In Kolkata
Srinivasan arrived in the city yesterday evening (Saturday) to attend a dinner thrown by former board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya. Speculation has been rife that some members of the BCCI have rallied together for Srinivasan's exit from Indian cricket’s apex body.
Besides Dalmiya and Srinivasan, Indian Premier League Commissioner Rajeev Shukla, board vice president Chitrak Mira and functionaries of Cricket Association of Bengal were present at the dinner yesterday.
Meanwhile, Dalmiya held yesterday a one-on-one with Shukla. Later, facing questions from the media, Shukla said: “Everything is under discussion”. He did not elaborate.
Suspension
In yet another development, the BCCI has suspended Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of N. Srinivasan and "member of the team management" of IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
According to a release issued by the Board, Meiyappan as an accredited team official is subject to the provisions of the IPL Operational Rules and the BCCI Anti-Corruption Code for Participants.
"Pending further investigations and any subsequent hearing by the BCCI Disciplinary Committee or the IPL Code of Behaviour Committee, Mr Meiyappan has been suspended by the BCCI from any involvement in the sport of cricket and in particular from any involvement with the Chennai Super Kings team," it said.
BCCI officials added in the release that they have met with officers from the Mumbai police on the evening of 23 May, and will continue to offer all assistance to the police and regulatory authorities.
