External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had a detailed telephonic conversation with the Indian envoy in Sanaa, Ambassador Amrit Lugun, on the evolving situation in Yemen.

The telephone call was made as the Government is assessing the evolving situation there and considering options on how best to assist Indian nationals in that country.

There are now about 3,500 Indian nationals of which almost 50 per cent are nurses. A majority of the Indian nationals are in Sanaa (2,500) while there are about 250 in Aden and a few others in other cities.

On Thursday, Anil Wadhwa (Secretary, East) in the External Affairs Ministry convened an inter-ministerial meeting  of representatives of ministries of Defence, Home, Overseas Indian Affairs and Shipping to examine the various options that are available to the Government to assist Indian nationals in the current situation, official sources said.

Officials from Naval Headquarters, Air Force and Air India also attended the meeting as the Government examines all options.
