Tamil Nadu has emerged among the top 5 States with the most number of ‘Amazon Prime’ members in the country. Chennai and Coimbatore account for the fastest growth in ‘Amazon Prime’ membership, said Subbu Palaniappan, Head, Prime Member Growth and Engagement, Amazon India.
The e-commerce major sees rising membership from smaller towns.
Priced at ₹999 for a year, Amazon Prime, launched in 2016, offers a combination of shopping and entertainment options for subscribers. The number of items available for buying on the Amazon portal for ‘Prime’ members has swelled from to 40 million.
The company has established a separate fulfilment centre for large appliances because of the increase in demand, Palaniappan said and pointed out that there were six fulfilment centres in Tamil Nadu with a storage capacity of 1.5 million cubic feet. Four of these are in Chennai and two in Coimbatore, he said.
Without specifying the number of Prime subscribers, he said, “During the first year of the launch, India registered the highest growth in subscriber additions among countries where Amazon provides the offering.”
The company has tied up with a thousand Kirana stores in Tamil Nadu, to ensure prompt delivery within the ‘free one/two-day timeframe promised on ‘Prime’.
