Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will meet his Karnataka counterpart Siddaramaiah to get Cauvery waters released to tackle shortage in the delta region.
Palaniswami will a lead a delegation of ministers from the Cauvery Delta Districts.
Because of low storage level in Mettur dam, there is not enough water for irrigation in the delta region for the long-term samba cultivation. The Tamil Nadu government has made a request for appointment with the Karnataka Chief Minister, a press release said.
Cauvery delta, termed rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, is one of the largest agricultural delta district with a cultivable area of three lakh hectares for Samba, 1.68 lakh hectares for Kuruvai and 1.44 lakh hectares for Thaladi.
The area has come under stress due to shortage of water in the last few years and the State had repeatedly asked in vain for release of water to make up for the shortfall.
