Karnataka will get a fertiliser plant, as the State Government has agreed to provide land for this purpose, according to Ananth Kumar, Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister.
He was participating in the Agri Machinery Fair 2015 organised by Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday.
The Minister said that the Government will set up a urea manufacturing unit in Karnataka with an investment of Rs 5,500 crore. The plant would have a production capacity of 13 lakh tonnes per annum.
The Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, has agreed to give 500 acres for this purpose. Added to this, Karnataka will also have 10 per cent equity in the proposed project.
The Centre will extend all its help for the project, once the State finalises the plant location, he said.
Stating that the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, wants the country to be self-reliant in fertiliser production, he said India imports around 40 per cent of urea now.
The Minister said that nine urea manufacturing units were closed in the country in the last 10 years. The NDA Government has decided to build seven urea plants in the coming years. This includes the revival of some units also.
In the next 10 years, India will be exporting urea to other countries just like China, he added.
