A majority of mobile phone users use phones that cost less than ₹10,000 according to the India Browsing Trends 2015 report released by UCWeb, makers of the popular UC Browser.
While over 65 per cent of users were using phones from the budget segment, close to half of all users indicated that they were planning to buy devices above the ₹10,000 mark, indicating the growth potential of the mobile phone market in India.
According to the report, close to a third of all users do not install more than 20 apps on their mobile phones. The browser is unsurprisingly the most used application, followed by social networking apps, games and instant messaging services.
The overwhelming majority of users use their browsers to download different kinds of content on to their devices. Music and video media are the preferred content types. The study noted extreme inequality in the gender distribution of users, with more than 90 per cent of them being male.
The study also found that although Internet penetration has been increasing, it continues to be extremely uneven with 80 per cent of users being from six major states and their capitals. Maharashtra and Delhi lead the way in terms of user volume, followed by West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
