Popular Bollywood singer and composer, Bappi Lahiri, 69, who popularised disco music in India died due to multiple health issues at a Mumbai hospital on Tuesday.
The moment the news broke, social media was full of tributes to Bappi Lahiri.
Born in Kolkata in 1952, Lahiri was known as the ‘Disco King of India’. He composed songs for several hit movies such as ‘Disco Dancer’, ‘Sharaabi’, ‘Dance Dance’ among others. While he was primarily known for his disco output, Lahiri could also tune melodious numbers as was evident from his music for films such as ‘Chalte Chalte’ and ‘Zakhmee’.
In his long career, he was awarded the Filmfare for the best music director once in 1985 for the Amitabh Bachchan-starred Sharaabi, despite being nominated on six occasions between 1982 to 2018.
Bappi Lahiri made in-your-face bling jewellery and colourful attire his trademark.
He briefly dabbled in politics joining the BJP in 2014. He contested the Lok Sabha elections on the party ticket in Serampore. In 2017, he quit politics altogether to focus on his music.
The tributes for Lahiri, included a message from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Home Minister Amit Shah termed the composer’s demise as “a big void”.
President of India Ram Nath Kovind tweeted his condolences.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also paid his respects.
Actor Ajay Devgn tweeted saying Lahiri’s music “had an edge.”
Yuvraj Singh, former cricketer had tweeted that he will be fondly remembered for his mesmerising musical compositions.
