At least one person was killed and nine others injured after a blast ripped through a chemical plant in eastern China, days after a similar disaster at a chemical warehouse killed 123 people.

The explosion took place last night at Shandong Runxing Chemical Technology Co. Ltd in Dongfu Village, Huantai County in Shandong Province after a separator caught fire, local officials said today.

The environmental protection departments of both Zibo City and Huantai County said they have not detected any contamination after the blast, state-run

Xinhua news agency reported.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

With a registered capital of $31.3 million, the plant is a subsidiary of Shandong’s Runxing Group.

It produces chemicals such as adiponitrile, a colourless liquid that can burn when encountering with fire. It can give off toxic fumes after decomposing on heating or burning.

The blast came 10 days after a series of explosions at a chemical warehouse in north China’s Tianjin Municipality that left at least 123 people dead and 54 missing.
