At least four people were injured and nearly 60 houses were toppled when a 4.9-magnitude quake jolted a border area near southwest China today.
The quake that hit the border areas of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces has toppled 56 houses and damaged 815 others in Yunnan’s Qiaojia county, the county government said.
Four people were slightly injured when the quake hit the areas at 10:46 a.m. (local time), officials said.
“Many people ran out of buildings when the quake came, but there was no falling debris. The shopping mall resumed business shortly afterwards,” a mall shopper was quoted by the state-run Xinhua news agency as saying.
Rescue work is underway, the county government said.
