American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave won the top awards on Sunday night at the 71st annual Golden Globes, cementing their front-runner status ahead of the Oscar nominations on Thursday.
David O Russell’s con-artist caper won the comedy category, while British director Steve McQueen’s tale of a free man kidnapped into slavery was voted the Year’s best drama by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Mexico’s Alfonso Cuaron took best director for Gravity, while Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto took the best actor and supporting actor in a drama for their roles in Dallas Buyers Club.
Leonardo DiCaprio was named best actor in a comedy for his portrayal of a brash financial dealer in The Wolf of Wall Street while Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence of American Hustle were named best actress and best supporting actress in a comedy or musical. Cate Blanchett won best dramatic actress.
In the big television prizes, Breaking Bad won best drama series with Bryan Cranston picking up the best TV actor in a drama for his role as protagonist Walter White.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine was named best TV comedy, with the show’s Adam Samberg winning the trophy for best actor in a comedy.
The best actress in a TV drama was Robin Wright for her role in the Netflix series House of Cards, while Golden Globes co-host Amy Poehler was named best actress in a comedy for her role in Parks and Recreation.
The prize for best foreign film went to The Great Beauty from Italy, while Disney’s Frozen won for best animated film.
