Civil defence officials say that the death toll in the floods and mudslides caused by heavy downpours in two states in southeastern Brazil has gone up to 32.
More than 50,000 have been forced to leave their homes.
The Civil Defence Department of Minas Gerais state had yesterday said on its Web site that 17 people died in floodwaters or mudslides.
It said that about 4,000 people were forced to seek shelter in public buildings or in the homes of friends and relatives.
In neighbouring Espirito Santo state, the department said on its Web site that 15 people were killed and close to 50,000 people were forced from their homes by mudslides and rivers overflowing their banks.
