A 22-year-old woman became the first female Pakistani to scale the world’s tallest mountain, climbers said today.
Samina Baig reached the 8,848-metre summit of Mount Everest on Sunday, according to Karrar Haidri of the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
“She is the youngest among the only three Pakistanis, who have so far made it to the top of Mount Everest,” Haidri told dpa by phone.
“Congratulations Pakistan,” Baig wrote in a text sent to Haidri after reaching the summit.
Baig lives in Shimshal Valley of Pakistan’s northern Hunza region, which is surrounded by several lofty peaks.
Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune reported that she conquered the Mount Everest without using supplementary oxygen.
