German Chancellor Angela Merkel has again ruled out supplying weapons to the Syrian opposition and wants to see the G8 summit engage with Russia on how to solve the crisis.

“Under no circumstances will we participate in supplying weapons,” Merkel told RTL television before leaving for the summit.

“It is important that a political process gets underway. This cannot be solved by military means alone,” she said.

“Unfortunately, Russia has until now prevented several resolutions in the [UN] Security Council. Perhaps we can now make progress on this issue.” There are “certainly going to be controversial discussions in some areas” at the G8, she said.
