Google Inc has partnered with Luxottica SpA, the makers of Ray-Ban and Oakley sunglasses, to bring a high fashion sensibility to its high-tech wearable computer, Google glass, the company said on Monday.
“Luxottica understands how to build, distribute and sell great products that their clients and consumers love — something we care deeply about at Glass, too,” Google said in a blog posting.
“They’ll bring design and manufacturing expertise to the mix, and, together, we’ll bring even more Glass style choices to our Explorers,” said Google referring to the first customers able to currently buy Google Glass before it goes on general sale.
The deal, which will also allow Google Glass to be sold through the Italian eyewear giant’s thousands of stores, may help Glass gain traction despite privacy concerns and questions about its performance.
The technology giant currently sells more basic versions of Google Glass eyewear only through a handful of locations to selected buyers who have to apply to purchase the $1,500 device.
Google has not announced when the device will go on general retail sale.
