Heavy monsoon rain on Monday shut down the Philippine capital and killed one person amid severe flooding and landslides, the disaster risk management office said.
Two people were missing after being swept away by strong currents while crossing swollen rivers in the northern provinces of Abra and Mountain Province, the office said.
More than 83,000 people were affected by the bad weather, including some 4,000 residents forced to flee their homes in Manila.
Government offices, all schools, embassies, courts and the stock exchange in Manila were closed in Manila as a wide area in the capital was flooded following the torrential rains overnight.
One man was killed in a road accident in the northern province of Apayao, the disaster risk management office said.
The weather bureau said the monsoon rain was being enhanced by Tropical Storm Trami, which remained almost stationary for six hours off the country’s north—eastern coast.
Trami, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometres per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 90 kph, was moving east—northeast towards Taiwan, it added.
Rains from Tropical Storm Trami fell across the city of nearly more than 12 million people throughout the night and continued today morning.
Waist-deep water in some parts of Manila made roads and highways unpassable.
Some commuters on public transport were left stranded, and had to wade waist-deep through muddy, trash-filled water.
